Chicago city directories were issued in 1870, 1871, 1872 and 1873, making it appear as if the publishers never skipped a beat following the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871. Read Chicago Directories in the 1870's to discover when the city was canvassed for each of these directories.
The 1871 directory also includes some “census” information, including the number of people in the family, males, females, and the birthplace of the person whose name is listed.
