John Zender was born in Germany in 1813 and came to Chicago around 1840, living at what is now Chicago Avenue at Michigan Avenue with his wife Anna Maria Schmidt. By the late 1850s, Mr. Zender was a shoemaker at 180 Blue Island Avenue (1013 S. Blue Island Avenue today, part of the UIC campus). By the 1870s, Mr. Zender had moved north to Evanston Township, which was later annexed to Chicago and is now the Rogers Park neighborhood. John Zender died in 1877, and Anna Maria in 1891. They are buried at St. Henry Cemetery at Devon Avenue and Ridge Road in Chicago.
