John Vannatta was born in New York in 1796. After moving to Michigan in the 1830s, Vannatta settled in the Chicago area by 1850. His first wife, Polly, died at their home in Leyden Township in 1851. John Vannatta remarried and he and his second wife Sarah had three more sons. By 1870, Mr. Vannatta had retired from farming and was living with his son John. He was widowed a second time by 1880, and lived with his son Henry and next door to another son, George, in Jefferson Township (now 4620 W. Armitage Avenue). The township was annexed by the city of Chicago in 1889. John Vannatta died in 1885 and was buried at Union Ridge Cemetery in Chicago's Norwood Park neighborhood.
