Vice President (1895) and later Chairman of the Board (1924) of Sears, Roebuck & Company. Made substantial gifts to African American and European Jewish communities in Chicago and all over the country, to build public schools and moderate-income housing, among other things. Also helped establish the Museum of Science and Industry.
