O'Brien Residence

Morgan O'Brien was born in Ireland in 1825. By 1857, Morgan, a bridgetender, and his wife Mary were living in Chicago on Des Plaines Street between Harrison Street and Van Buren Street (now the 200 block of South Des Plaines Street). Morgan worked as a Post Office Clerk in the early 1860s, and moved to the 400 block of South Jefferson Street (now the 1000 block of South Jefferson Street). At the time of the Chicago Fire in 1871, the O'Briens and their four sons were living at 425 S. Jefferson Street (now 1020 S. Jefferson Street) and operating a grocery at the same address. After the fire, Morgan O'Brien moved his home and business to 132 Johnson Street (now 1323 S. Peoria Street). He died there in September 1892.
