Joachim (Joseph) Krehl was born in 1833 in Pommerania (then German, now Polish). He arrived in America in 1858 along with seven family members, including his younger brother Johann. By 1862, Joachim was living in Chicago on Second Street near Milwaukee Avenue, today the 1100 block of West Huron Street. In 1871, Joachim's brother Johann (John), a teamster, lived at 36 Fay Street. By 1878, both Krehl brothers lived at 45 Fay Street (now 694 N. Peoria Street). Joachim, a blacksmith, was by then married to Marie Bartels and the father of five, including twins Emma and Amelia. By 1880, Joachim and Mary lived at 325 May Street (now 845 N. May Street) where they would reside for more than twenty years. In the 1900 Census, Joachim went by the name Joseph. He died in 1906 and is buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois, along with his wife Mary who died in 1914.
