Gustave Hetzel, Jr. was born in Chicago in 1871, the son of German immigrants Gustave and Ida Hetzel. Gustave Jr. married Lena (Lenora) Six in 1891. In 1900, Gustave and Lena and their two children were living with his parents at 428 W. Belden Avenue (now 600 W. Belden Avenue). Ten years later, the couple had had six children, five still living. Gustave was a Deputy Sheriff, and the family still resided on Belden Avenue. In the mid-1920s, the Hetzels moved to 1250 W. Columbia Avenue. Gustave worked as a grain market clerk and later as a movie theater engineer. His widowed daughter Arlyne and her daughter moved in with them. Lena Hetzel died in 1944 and was buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. Gustave died ten years later and was buried with her.
