John M. Bywater was born in England in 1839. By 1859, he had moved to Chicago and was working as a servant in the Wadsworth household on North Pine Street (now North Michigan Avenue). He married Anne McDermott in 1863. The couple had five children. By 1870, the Bywaters were living at 97 E. Hinsdale Street (now 200 W. Chestnut) and John was employed as an ostler (stableman). Anne died in 1878 and John married Sarah Farrell the following year. John later worked for the Chicago Fire Department and died in 1909. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois.
