Rome Residence

Jacob Rome was born in Germany in 1811. By 1857 he was living in Chicago with his wife Maria and their six children. He ran a grocery and boardinghouse on what is now the 700 block of S. Wells Street.
In 1859 the family had moved to 292 State Street (now 946 N. State Street) where Mr. Rome operated a lager beer saloon which relocated the next year to 145 Randolph Street (now 660 W. Randolph Street). The family lived at 156 Wells Street (now 649 N. Wells Street). The family moved to the Randolph Street address and by 1867 Mr. Rome was proprietor of the Niagara House and the family lived at 248 Randolph Street (now 911 W. Randolph Street).
After the fire of 1871 the Romes moved to 222 N. Clark Street (now 739 N. Clark Street) and Mr. Rome ran a restaurant at 244 Madison Street (now 917 W. Madison Street). The Romes remained at the Clark Street address and Mr. Rome died there in 1880. His wife Anna died four years later. They are buried at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
