According to its current website (the congregation is now called Kol Ami) South Shore Temple was founded in 1922. Its first synagogue was located at Jeffery and 72nd - the Tribune reported on the dedication of a community house at that location on Feb. 19, 1924. In 1970, the congregation moved to 145 E. Ohio.

In the early 70s South Shore Temple moved near north and changed its name to Kol Ami, and about five years ago merged into Sinai Congregation on Delaware in the Gold Coast. About 1955 a large sanctuary was built that was modeled after the Sanctuary of the Sinai Congregation in Hyde Park. At its peak in the early 60s there were 800 families in the congregation.
