South Center Store

The South Center department store had two main goals: to offer quality products in what was known as "Chicago's Harlem," and to reject racist-hiring practices by recruiting African-Americans as employees. The store was founded in 1928 at a time when most businesses refused to hire people of color. The building was demolished in 1970.
