Michael Kennealy was born in Ireland around 1815. He and his wife Honora (aka Hannah or Norah) came to the United States before the 1850s and settled in Salem, Massachusetts. By the mid-1860s, the couple and their children lived in Chicago at 293 S. Des Plaines Street (now the 600 block of South Des Plaines Street) where Mr. Kennealy operated a grocery. By the late 1860s, the Kennealy family lived at 176 Deering Street (now 518 S. Loomis Street). Michael Kennealy died in 1869 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois. His widow and children remained at the Deering Street residence through the 1870s. Honora Kennealy died in 1893 and was buried with her husband. The Kennealy's son James (1852-1910) served in the US Cavalry in the 1870s, and James's son Frank (1890-1944) was a Chicago fireman.
